Roma in comeback win over Madrid

  • 90+3′ The Madrid players surround ref Fandel as he seems to blow a minute early… Roma take the first-leg win.
  • 90+2′ Totti lays the ball out to Mancini… sterling defence by Madrid to block the shot…
  • 90+1′ Cassetti booked as the fourth official indicates three minutes of added on time…
  • 89′ Mexes hurt after what seemed like a fair challenge by Ramos. It wastes a few more seconds for the home side.
  • 86′ Drenthe driving into the area… he comes across Mexes and throws himself down. No penalty for that, sunshine.
  • 84′ Roma seeing the match through… their fans are expectant…
  • 82′ Van Nistelrooy now on the left whipping one in for Raul, who chests back for BAPTISTA… JUST OVER THE BAR!! He connected well with the ball, bending it a foot too high.
  • 80′ MADRID HIT THE POST!!! Drenthe attacked down the right and squared for Van Nistelrooy, whose first-time strike cannoned off the upright and flew away.
  • 79′ Double Madrid change: Royston Drenthe and Julio Baptista for Robben and Diarra.
  • 78′ Three on three for the Italian side… Giuly passes inside for Totti, who helps it on for Mancini on the left… it has too much on it… Madrid survive.
  • 76′ The last Roma change: Matteo Ferrari on for Juan, who limps off.
  • 75′ The Spanish champions are reduced to trying their luck from a long way out at present.
  • 72′ Gago sets himself and strikes…. well over the bar. The Argentine showed great confidence to shoot from distance.
  • 72′ De Rossi ‘doing a Totti’ and shooting from 50-odd yards on a free-kick… blocked.
  • 70′ Juan is down for a minute or so receiving attention, but is okay to continue the match.
  • 69′ Ramos now booked for catching Juan late… he will miss the second leg in the Santiago Bernabeu.
  • 68′ Perrotta is shown a yellow card for what looks like a handball as he jumped with an opponent.
  • 67′ Roma change: Max Tonetto on for Panucci.
  • 67′ More pressure from Madrid as Diarra bangs a shot that ricochets off somebody on its way to the goal…
  • 66′ Robben marauding down the loft, shooting from an angle… Doni blocks but cannot hold it and Raul almost sticks away the rebound!!
  • 64′ Aquilani felled by Torres as he breaks over halfway. The youngster is booked.
  • 62′ Roma change: Alberto Aquilani on for Pizarro.
  • 62′ Ramos cracks a left-footed shot just past the post for Madrid.
  • 61′ Mexes hacks clear as Madrid find their passing rhythm, only for Los Merengues to come right back at them…
  • 58′ The long ball from the back was controlled by Totti, who turned his man Heinze brilliantly and knocked the winger through… he rounded Casillas and finished inside the near post from a tight angle with Cannavaro legging it back. Great goal.
  • 58′ MANCINI GIVES ROMA THE LEAD IN THE STADIO OLIMPICO!!!
  • 57′ Giuly chasing down a lifted diagonal ball, but it runs away from him. Not even he is that quick!!
  • 55′ Cassetti on the prowl, trying to play a low ball down the channel for Totti to latch onto. There is no way through the away defence.
  • 53′ Giuly again wastes possession, giving Madrid a free-kick. Perhaps he is better used from the bench these days.
  • 50′ De Rossi to the feet of Totti, who clips the ball out to Mancini… play is switched and Giuly controls before shooting… FOR A THROW-IN!! He is officially the worst ‘player to watch’ in uk.eurosport.yahoo.com history.
  • 49′ Mexes is tigerish in the Roman defence, tackling and closing with venom.
  • 48′ Totti brings down a ball arriving over his head, only for Gabriel Heinze to get a leg on it and Ramos sweeps up.
  • 46′ A free-kick for Roma near the by-line in the early seconds of the new half… dealt with by Madrid.
  • 46′ The second half starts, Roma now kicking to our right.
  • - No changes in personnel at the break.
  • 45′ We play approximately three seconds of injury time, German referee Herbert Fandel deciding that there is no reason to add any more than that.
  • 44′ Another chance for Guti to deliver, this time from the very corner of the box on the right. It comes in from his left foot… and Doni punches away double-fisted as Ramos arrives beyond him.
  • 42′ His effort is into the Roma wall and Juan clears the home side’s lines.
  • 41′ Raul wins a free-kick 35 yards out, De Rossi catching him. Guti will shoot from here.
  • 40′ The Brazilian attacks the ball at the near post, directing it over the top.
  • 40′ Mancini wins a free-kick on the left touchline level with the penalty area, thanks to some nippy footwork…
  • 38′ They have a corner here, with Guti coming across to take it… Ramos rises in the middle of the box but Doni just gets enough on it for Roma to clear.
  • 36′ Madrid have a lot of men injured: Christoph Metzelder, Javier Saviola, Wesley Sneijder, Pepe, Robinho and Marcelo. Their midfield is badly hit, missing first-teamers Robinho and Sneijder.
  • 34′ Ramos with a shaky clearance that causes Casillas a brief headache… the Spain defender gets away with it.
  • 33′ Van Nistelrooy heads back a long ball for Robben to volley… it is blocked. Throw to Madrid. They take the ball all the way back to halfway.
  • 30′ Madrid defend a free-kick that Totti eyes at the back post.
  • 29′ Raul slips in Van Nistelrooy… he slides and shoot a few yards wide. Unlucky for Madrid.
  • 28′ Van Nistelrooy fouls De Rossi on the touchline. Madrid boss Bernd Schuster looks concerned just behind him.
  • 26′ Ramos swings wildly at a shot and misses the ball, to the mirth of the crowd. They are not laughing moments after when Raul lines up an overhead kick… but it flies high and wide as he turns.
  • 24′ Mancini moved down the left side of the penalty area and squared for the arriving Totti. The despairing defence of Gago alongside him saved the day… but following in was Pizarro to slam the ball in off the bar in the far top corner from 10 yards!!!
  • 24′ THE EQUALISING GOAL FOR ROMA!!! DAVID PIZARRO!!!
  • 23′ Miguel Torres penalised for jumping into Panucci before Diarra is harshly shown a yellow card for a tackle on Mancini. His studs were up, but he got the ball…
  • 21′ Robben hitting the right by-line now, crossing for RAUL… HE HEADS WIDE FROM EIGHT YARDS!! A great chance to make it 2-0 - you would expect the darling of Real Madrid and Champions League legend to hit the target from there. Let-off for Roma.
  • 20′ Daniele De Rossi turns and shoots from distance, harmlessly wide of the near post of the visiting team.
  • 19′ Perrotta shepherded away from the ball by Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro, who feeds it back to his goalie Casillas.
  • 17′ Mahamadou Diarra with the ball, trying for a one-two… Doni comes out late to pick up the ball as Mexes shields it for him, but gets there in the end.
  • 15′ Mancini almost gets away down the left… Madrid keep it tight though, Sergio Ramos making the tackle.
  • 13′ Juan strides out of the Roma defence to intercept and set them attacking again, but nobody is on the end of the move.
  • 12′ Simone Perrotta has a pop for the home side that Casillas keeps at bay. Their fans try to get behind them again after that early blow.
  • 10′ Madrid score again! No they don’t - the flag is up! Van Nistelrooy was a yard off when the shot came in, saved by Doni before he stuck it inside the near post.
  • 9′ Marco Cassetti brings the ball forward for Roma… WHAT A SHOT!! Iker Casillas stuck out a hand to save as it dipped towards the bottom corner then pounced on the rebound. Now THERE is a ‘player to watch’.
  • 8′ Robben again on the left squared for Guti to shoot from a central position 25 yards out… the ball came off Raul and swept past Doni, who was played on by Giuly walking out at the top of the field. Tsk - ‘player to watch’ indeed.
  • 8′ GOAL FOR REAL MADRID!!! RAUL HAS IT!!
  • 6′ Robben to the left-hand by-line… he cannot get the ball across effectively and Doni collects.
  • 5′ Roma cannot capitalise on the first corner of the game. However, they are on top in the initial stages.
  • 3′ Ludovic Giuly skating into the box to get on the end of it, and Madrid clear before defending further attacks around the edge of the 18-yard area…
  • 2′ The first attack of the game, Christian Panucci and Philippe Mexes combining to win a throw-in for Roma.
  • 1′ The match kicks off in Rome, Roma kicking from right to left in traditional maroon. Madrid are in all white, as you’d expect.
  • - Robinho is injured for El Madrid, giving Dutchman and former Chelsea hero Arjen Robben a start on the left wing. Guti starts in midfield, as does Fernando Gago. Raul and Ruud van Nistelrooy are in attack of course.
  • - Our Roma player to watch Ludovic Giuly is in the first 11. It looks like a typcial five-man midfield for Luciano Spalletti’s team, with talisman Francesco Totti the target man.
